During the survey on rose aphids and the host associations, we found the aphid parasitoid Aphidius popovi Stary (1978) (Hym., Braconidae) on Rosa damascena. The parasitoid is a new record from Iran and firstly described from Uzbekistan highland areas. Dr. Peter Stary of Czech republic identified the wasp species. Specimens collected in damask rose garden of ResearchInstitute of Forests & Rangelands of Iran on Sep.14.2004.
The specimens are deposited in arthropod museum of RIFR.
A. popovi is related to Aphidius rosae Hal. and Aphidius absinthii Hal., and differs from them by the very short metacarpus and by the obtuse ocellar triangle. In females, body color is yellow orange, upper part of head dark brown. and with dark patches The area surrounding the ocellies. Lobes of mesonotum and, metanotum with brownish spots. Wing infumated, venation light grayish. Ovipositor sheath greyish brown. Antenna 16-17 segmented, filiform, reaching the middle of abdomen. Forewing pterostigma 3.5-4 times as long as its width, metacarpus very short. Propodeum areolated with 3-4 hairs on upper areola. Tergit I with 12-13 costula in anterolateral area. Length of body 2.0- 2.6 mm.
Male individuals are darker than females, antennae with 19 segmented.
