Like any other agricultural crop, medicinal plants are subject to attack by insect pests. With regard to undesirable side effects of chemical drugs and worldwide incresing interests of medicinal plants, protection of plants of medicinal value against pests deserves prime attention.
The key to any IPM program is the study of insect fauna associated with specific medicinal plant. Thus principal objectives of the present study were to identify insects associated with major medicinal plants and to access their relative importance, host preference and distribution. The survey was carried out in the period 1998-2002 in natural fields and experimental plots in Tehran, Ghazvin, and Isfahan provinces.
Sampling was done using conventional methods include sweep nets, aspirators, hand picking and snider trap. Collections were made weekly during the spring and summer. Specimens were collected and sealed in plastic bags and returned to the lab, pinned or preserved in alcohol. Imature stages were retained untill adult emerge. Overall 5000 specimens (other than those specimens in alcohol) were collected, prepared, coded and identified. These are categorized in three groups of pests, parasite or predator and manna inducing insects.
Aphids have been the main insects pests associated with medicinal plants. Some aphids are associated with specific host like Hydaphis foeniculi Pass. on Fennel, while others are oligophagous and have a number of plant hosts such as Brachycadus cardui L. on chamomile, marigold and artichoke. Included in this article are brief decription of the hosts, economic importance and dispersal pattern of key pests and natural enemies associated with major medicinal plants of Iran.
