In a field survey of forest plantations in Tehran vicinity in the years 2000 and 2001, stem rot and dieback was observed on a number of white Mulberry (Morus alba L.) trees. Symptoms of the disease were mainly observed on the trunk as dry rot without any sapwood exudates followed by terminal dieback. Samples of the infected tissues were surface-sterilized and placed on P.D.A. medium, and identified as N mangiferae Suttan & Dyko was detected. In culture media, isolates of N. mangiferae ftom the host, produced felty to floffy, grey to brownish black aerial mycelium. Single conidornata or aggregations of black conidiomata were formed after incubation of cultures for 6 weeks to 2 months under near U.V. light. Better results were obtained by inoculating sterilized Morus alba twigs and exposing them to near U.V. light. Abundant fungus fruiting bodies (Pycnidium) occurred from most isolates in 2-3 months. The pathogenicity field-tests were carried out in September on three-year old white Mulberry seedlings using conventional methods.
