Brown-tail moth, Euproctis chrysowhoea (L.), is a polyphagous defoliatorthat attacks forest and fruit trees. The insect is accounted as the rnost important pest of oaks in Arasbaran forests. To measure larval defoliation rate, daily and periodic leaf consumption were estimated for each larval
stages. Larvae of the pest were reared on potted oak seedlings covered with screen cage. According to the results, larvae had 5 instars and duration of 1,2, 3 (before hibernation), 3 (after hibernation), 4 and fifth instars were recorded as 7*1,76+2,37+4, 12+3, ll+4 and 22*6 days, respectively. The average food consumption for each instar group was recordqd as 0.210.02, 0.6+0. 05, 3. 8+ 0.3 9, 12.311 .30, 18.7 +5 .87 and 5 4.7 *l 6.04 cm", respective ly. These amounts of leaf consumption comprise 0.2,0.7, 4.2, 13.6,20.7 and 60.6 percent of total food^ consumption for each larval instar. Thus each lawae consumed 90,30 cm' of Quercus petraea leaves in the course of total larval period which roughly took 105 days.
