Introduction of Elm-bead gall mite, Aceria campestricola (Frauenfeld) (Acari.: Eriophyidae) and some biological notes in Guilan Province

Abstract

The Eriophyid mites are important pests of forest trees and ornamental plants in Guilan Province. Further to feed from plant juice, these mites may cause deformities in plant tissues and transmit plant pathogens. During a faunal study on eriophyid mites in Guilan Province, an injurious species, were collected and identified as the Elm-bead gall mite Aceria campestricola. In spring, the Elm-bead gall mite induce the formation of bead like galls (approximately I mm in diameter) under surface of elm leaves. Vast number of galls occurring on a single leaf give a distinctly roughened appearance to infested leaves. Heavy infestations cause weakness and reduce resistance of elm trees to plant pathogens. For separating, preserving, clearing and mounting of mites on microscopic slides we used standard methods used by workers. Morphological characteristics such as coxisternal plate, genital region, leg especially feather claw, prodorsal plates as well as gall characters on host plant were used for identification of the mite.
